Command presence on the battlefield or in your display case with this exquisite French Napoleonic General & Staff Officer Bicorn Hat. Handcrafted with meticulous attention to detail, this iconic two-pointed hat (Chapeau à Bras) epitomizes the grand visual prestige, authority, and tactical brilliance of High Command officers during the French Empire and Napoleonic Wars.
Historical Legacy & Heritage
Originating in the late 18th century as an evolution of the traditional tricorn, the Bicorn Hat became the definitive symbol of military leadership across Europe during the Napoleonic Era (1799–1815).
While line infantry transitioned to the rigid shako, high-ranking generals, marshals, and staff officers of Napoleon’s Grande Armée retained the bicorn as a mark of supreme rank and distinction.
The Ostrich Feather Trim: Rich, voluminous black ostrich feather fringe lining the upper crest was reserved exclusively for senior commanders and generals, signaling rank from a distance across smoke-filled battlefields.
Gold Bullion Loop & Cockade: The dramatic gold bullion braid (ganse) and brass officer's button hold the national cockade in place—a symbol of supreme authority and patriotic allegiance.
Fore-and-Aft Style: Worn en colonne (front-to-back) by general staff to distinguish command personnel from field officers who often wore theirs side-to-side (en bataille).
